Aaron in our cool climate high altitude Merlot vineyard in Orange NSW

FROM VINE TO WINE

Aaron asked himself how he could combine his passion of growing and gathering food, as well as making alcohol out of anything he could…after 11 years hairdressing in the big smoke, he began studying viticulture and made the tree change to the cool climate region, Orange.

Bex found her love for wine 18 years ago in her homeland, New Zealand. Initially, her interest in wine was sparked working for a winery in Canterbury. It has taken her to work at vineyards and wineries around the globe learning skills and techniques from a wealth of great winemakers. Bernkastel-Kues – Germany developed her love for Riesling, Oregon – USA furthered her passion for cool climate Pinot Noir, and vineyards in Chile exposed her to seriously good Malbec and Cabernets.

Moving to Orange in 2018…

Following our passion

The two wine lovers met while working at the same Cellar Door. They would often joke about how hard it would be to break in to the industry and considered taking over an abandoned vineyard they would pass on their way to work. They would laugh and call themselves “Grape Pirates”…over the years the name began to stick.

What started as a joke, turned into a headspace, using their combined experience to make small parcels of fruit into the most delicious wine possible.

Over the next few years, they began to make minimal intervention wines and began managing a beautiful little vineyard (990 metres above sea level).

Grape Pirates was officially born with its first vintage in 2022.
